What things should I be using to decorate for home to give a new look?

I just renovated my home, and I can give you a few ideas based on what I did.

I've painted my house before, and added new accessories like throw pillows and curtains, but nothing really gave my home a new look until I changed everything.

I had carpet on the floor, and it was several years old. We ripped it out and put in hardwood floors. You might not think you can afford them, but we found our hardwood at a local auction and got it for .50 per square foot.

Once you have your floor installed, decide on a color scheme. I took my living room colors from a slipper chair I had in blue and brown. I painted the walls a Benjamin Moore color in deep brown, and complemented everything with blue. Previously I only had a beige, and everything looked worn and washed out. A dark color really livens up a room, as does a very light color like white if you accessorize properly.

Once the painting was done, I replaced all of my photo frames and mirrors with new ones. I found some photos I really liked online and enlarged them as wall art. I added new throw pillows in blue and brown, in luxurious fabrics like velvet and silk.

The best advice I can give if you change your floor is to add a large area rug in your seating area. I found a blue/brown shag area rug like this Ragtime Rag area rug The squares really make it stand out, and its very comfy on the feet.

I redid the kitchen and all of the bedrooms as well, and now my six year old home has a new look.
Teen Hangout Room Ideas?

vivid-fuschia-f-300-04.jpgFor a bold room, I'd choose hot pink, lime green, and use orange as an accent.

Depending on how bold you want the room, you could paint each color (pink and green) on two walls each. If you just want a splash of color, you could have the walls white except for bold stripes in hot pink and lime green. Stripes are really easy to do with painters tape. I've also seen those colors used in squares or circles created on plain white walls.

Bean bags are a must in rooms that you just want to hang out in. Go for the fuzzy fabric kind that feel more like giant pillows than bean bags. Have a shelving unit full of magazines and books and an iPod dock so you can all listen to music.

On your walls, use mirrors, wall sconces for candles, and framed photos in orange frames as accents. Be sure to have a lot of throw pillows lying around, and for an extra comfy floor add a big shag area rug like this lime green flokati area rug or this vivid fuchia area rug.

Another nice touch is a bubbling fountain or a retro lava lamp. They provide a soft glow and look great in a bright room.

Decorating living room with brown leather sofa?

I have a brown leather sofa and love seat. Originally I accented with taupe, but that got boring very quickly. Instead, I chose brown, red, and orange as my colors. These are flat colors, not bright, and they work very well together.

On the leather couch, add some red and orange accent pillows. You can add a brown pillow on there too, and if you are fussy about how your pillows are positioned, you can place the brown pillow between the orange and the red. Focus on fabrics that stand out against the leather, such as velvet or brocade.

I have a feature wall that is painted a deep farmhouse red. It's not too bright and I used flat paint. Only one wall with the red, as it seems to stand out too much otherwise. If you do a feature wall, choose the wall that you find yourself focusing on the most when you enter the room or the wall that the couch rests against. Add a big area rug to your floor to liven up the space. Something like this Orange and Red area rug is quite dramatic and really stands out well against a leather sofa.

Use red and orange in your accents when choosing picture frames, mirrors, candles, and lamp shades. Even a little bit of a vivid accent color stands out against dark brown, so don't overuse.

What is the most appropriate rug for my living room?

I have a red leather living room set with black tables.

dyn-nolita-1306-090.jpgWithout knowing the shade of red you have for your couch or what type of black the tables are (shiny, flat, wood, etc.), I would say go for a combo of rug/wall that will minimize the red of your couches. Often in black and white rooms, you can add a slash of red to liven things up a bit. However, in the case of a red couch, you have a large amount of color and need to work it into a neutral palette.

I'd go for a rug such as this Black and Red contemporary area rug that will still draw in your colors but isn't too bold. Alternately, you could choose an area rug such as this Black ash area rug if you like all black and prefer a luxurious shag area rug.

With a room such as yours, I'd go for a feature wall that is bright and the rest of the room neutral. If you don't like white or off white for your walls, you could paint the entire room a light mocha or other light neutral. It will still work with your furniture, it just won't be as bold. If you don't mind white, you could put up some white/black wall paper on your feature wall in a striking pattern.

What is a good wall color for a living room with a white tile floor?

cocoa-f-300-03.jpgWith a floor color like white, you can do almost any color. I'd focus on dark colors though, for at least one feature wall at least. Choose a chocolate brown on one wall and then a slightly lighter color on the other walls. You can put a great piece of artwork or family photos on the dark wall, and it will stand out against the floor.

Warm up your tile by adding area rugs. A warm, cozy shag would look great against white tile. Put something like this Cocoa Flokati on your floor. It  would look great with chocolate/taupe walls and dark brown wood coffee tables.

Can you help with some ideas to decorate a rectangle living room?

dyn-funky-2449_9116.jpgAdd a lot of color and a few differently shaped items to spice up your room.

If your room is a rectangle, focus on circular or rounded shapes. For example, a coffee table that has a curve like this would add some depth to a rectangle room.

When you have black and tan as your base, you are pretty free to add color where ever you see fit.  Put some bright red throw pillows on your couch. If red isn't your color, try a blue. Anything with a deep, vibrant tint will stand out.  Focus on different fabrics as well.

On your floor, add an area rug that has circular shapes such as this Funky Cream or this Dark Chocolate shag. A rug this color will contrast very well with your couch.

I'm not sure if you have windows in your room, but if you do you should add a curtain. Curtains always add a warmth to your room that bare windows are lacking.

If you can, grab an end table or two. Putting lamps on your end tables and surrounding your couch will make your room cozy. A vase with fresh flowers also adds a nice touch.
How do i design my room to feel like a cafe/lodge?

You just can't replicate the ambiance of a French Cafe.  The smell of croissants, cheese, and coffee all blend into quaint furnishings and understated art on the walls.  At the very least, you can try to bring a bit of France into your home with a Cafe Kitchen.

Keep you paint tones neutral/dark.  Don't go for bright colors, any cafe colors are muted and soothing.

Add some plants. Any sort of climbing plant will do, or tiny flowering plants. Cafes always have pretty plants in beautiful vases.

Your table and chairs should be black wrought iron. Generally called Bistro tables, they seat 2 to 4. Add a candle to the center of the table for a cafe look.

Create a home organization center by adding a chalkboard and a bulletin board to your walls. Put up photos of places you'd like to visit or have been to. Add a nightly 'menu' for your family to see when they enter the room.

Your wall art should consist of pictures of food, wine, or scenic cafes. Home stores usually carry wood-backed photos of Parisian cafes or grapes/fruit plates.

Add a beautiful area rug to your floor or little smaller area rugs in key areas. A rug that is striped would look great in front of a door. Add a large rug under your table in a similar pattern or style.

Your kitchen cafe will get extra style points if it is full of the heavenly scents of baking. Have fun!

What interior design style should I choose for my house?

I just bought a new house and I hate all this modern simplistic bright colored furniture stuff. I'm not so thrilled about classic Victorian type decor either. Any suggestions?

dyn-myst-2015_2038.jpgMy suggestion is to mix styles. There is never a reason to stay within one type of style for your home if you like a few of them.

If you aren't into modern, bright colors or clean lines, I'd suggest a contemporary style accented with another style you are fond of. Maybe it's country, french country, retro, or what have you.

With contemporary styles, you can choose neutral toned couches that are overstuffed and comfortable. Maybe a large sectional in a neutral light gray or mocha. If you paint all of your walls dark gray, you will have to lighten up in other areas. A cream/cafe au lait color couch would be beautiful in a room like that.

For a good idea on how to mix colors and styles with a contemporary feel, check out this section of area rugs. Notice how there are circles, squares, and soft swooshes on the rugs.  These are generally found in contemporary styles.  You can mix colors and shapes to achieve the look you are seeking. For example, if you have a neutral room, add a large colorful bowl on your coffee table in a circular shape for contrast.

Add a large area rug for comfort and warmth, but also to add some style to your room. A rug such as this Slate area rug would go perfectly with mocha, grey, and black.

Find accessories that highlight your tastes.  If you like antique lanterns, find a way to work them in by using color and shape to incorporate them.  Frame your favorite photos and set up a collage or a collection on your end tables.  Use your imagination!  Decorating should be fun, not daunting.  Feel free to express yourself and you'll end up with a beautiful result.

How can I decorate a living room with white walls? I like olive green, dark brown, and orange for color.

Nice color combo!  It would definitely look cozy with the right touches.

Depending on what type of couch color you have (chocolate brown or olive green) add a large area rug under the base of the couch, extending under your coffee table.  For a true homey touch, get a deep pile area rug so that you have something cushy to sink your feet into when getting up and down.  A Flokati rug is so soft, has a long pile and adds a touch of luxury to your room.

With white walls, you really need to refocus the eye and use the white as a back drop.  Add some color with frames and other knick knacks.  One idea is to create a collage of black or deep brown frames, blowing up your favorite photos and putting them up in a set pattern on the wall.  You might want to focus on sunsets or orange flowers, just to get that extra orange color into your room. Prints of Prairie lilies, falling leaves, or the beautiful orange glow of the sun across water would look great.  If you blow the prints up in black and white or sepia, take a felt and lightly color in a random flower or leaf orange.  It's a very beautiful effect.

Fill up the wall space by adding items such as a large clock, wall sconces that can be plugged in, or framed artwork. Once again, focus on deep greens or orange colors, so that your eye is drawn to the color on the wall and not the white.

Be sure to add orange pillows to the couch and curtains to the windows in your room. They will liven up the space with color and create an extra level of coziness. It sounds like it will be a great room, enjoy!

What interesting and fun renovations can we make to our apartment?

dyn-funky-2444_9161.jpgNot everyone is interested in what they can do to make their home a playground. For some though, it's a must.  If you've ever thought that careening down your stairs on a slide would be a blast, read on.

I've seen a set of stairs turned into a slide, and although it's fun, getting back up those stairs isn't the easiest. You've essentially taken out your ability to walk back up unless you only put a slide down half the stairs.  Why not consider a fire pole instead? You can install it from the ceiling to the floor, and people on the loft level can just jump on it and slide down.

If it's your name on the mortgage of the loft, you can cut a hole in the floor and put a slide down there. I've seen this done in playrooms when people have large homes and a lot of kids. One trip down the slide got them from the bedroom to the playroom, and to say they loved it would be an understatement.

If you don't want to cut holes in floors or install a huge pole in your home, you could create a lounge/bar in your 2nd floor loft. Add a huge, white sectional sofa, a disco ball, and a bar with glass shelves. Protect your floor from spills of all types with a large area rug. Something like this Dark Brown Shag Rug would hide spills and still provide you with a funky cover for your floor. Add a disco ball, a rocking sound system, and a rope swing in the corner. You will have yourself a hot bar that you don't have to drive to get to.  The best part? You don't need to take a taxi home either.
