How should my 10 year old daughter do her room?

rmk-kid-11-705-1.jpg
A 10 year old has ever changing tastes, so you are best to stick to something that is universal, like butterflies and flowers. A theme like this would go great with Tatty Teddy because it's sweet and innocent.

You can find a lot of different bedding in purple and green. The purple is usually a shade of lilac and the green tends to be lime in color. A cute set with butterflies and flowers would look great in her room.

On the floor, add some pizazz with an area rug that would suite her theme. A rug like this Flowers and Butterflies area rug would bring out the blue in the shelves as well as highlight the purple and green.

In a butterfly room, leave plenty of space for accents. You can pin artificial flowers to a canopy over her bed and attach small fabric butterflies. You can also buy some wall art in a butterfly/flower theme.

Kids grow up so fast, and before you know it she'll want to change her room again! Have fun!

What interesting and fun renovations can we make to our apartment?

dyn-funky-2444_9161.jpgNot everyone is interested in what they can do to make their home a playground. For some though, it's a must.  If you've ever thought that careening down your stairs on a slide would be a blast, read on.

I've seen a set of stairs turned into a slide, and although it's fun, getting back up those stairs isn't the easiest. You've essentially taken out your ability to walk back up unless you only put a slide down half the stairs.  Why not consider a fire pole instead? You can install it from the ceiling to the floor, and people on the loft level can just jump on it and slide down.

If it's your name on the mortgage of the loft, you can cut a hole in the floor and put a slide down there. I've seen this done in playrooms when people have large homes and a lot of kids. One trip down the slide got them from the bedroom to the playroom, and to say they loved it would be an understatement.

If you don't want to cut holes in floors or install a huge pole in your home, you could create a lounge/bar in your 2nd floor loft. Add a huge, white sectional sofa, a disco ball, and a bar with glass shelves. Protect your floor from spills of all types with a large area rug. Something like this Dark Brown Shag Rug would hide spills and still provide you with a funky cover for your floor. Add a disco ball, a rocking sound system, and a rope swing in the corner. You will have yourself a hot bar that you don't have to drive to get to.  The best part? You don't need to take a taxi home either.

I'm in the process of trying to pick out a couch or sectional for my living room?

dyn-aria1107_110.jpg

Ah, I love couch shopping. It's a chance to give your room an entirely new look and feel.

Creating a family friendly room is all about functionality and style.  You need to figure out storage for toys and your own personal objects.  When purchasing furniture such as couches, you have to take your family into consideration as well.  If you are looking for a family friendly couch, consider either leather or fabric that is washable. I've had couches where I could literally pull off the cushions and throw them in the washing machine. With leather, you can buy leather wipes and wipe off spots and stains.

There are many different sizes and shapes of couches, but for a family the best bet is a sectional. With a sectional, you can add side tables and cozy lamps to cast a warm glow. Blow up some 8 x 10 photos in black and white and hang your favorite photos of your children on the wall behind the couch or another feature wall in your living room.

When creating a family friendly living room, you can make it even cozier by adding a large area rug in front of your couch. A rug such as this modern Circles and Circles area rug would go great with a dark colored couch in chocolate brown.

Spend time shopping around for the couch that feels the best for your family.   Picking out new furniture is one of the most exciting parts of decorating. Have fun!
Decorating an apartment?

dyn-300-allure-1907-990-grey-silver-01.jpg

An apartment is not a place that you own, it's a place that you live in for a year or two and then move on.  Because it's a transition space, it's more difficult to decorate. You can ask permission to paint, but normally the landlords aren't too crazy about people putting their personal touch on the rooms.  Even without paint, there are ways to make your space look personal and fantastic if you know a few tricks.

Adding color without paint is easy with bold accessories.  Take Pottery Barn for example, they have thousands of images on their web site of all of the new throw pillows, blankets, candles, and home organization tools.  Take the photos from the Pottery Barn web site as a model and find items from discount home stores, such as Ross or TJ Maxx, that look similar to what you are trying to achieve.  Try a huge collage of frames in the same color but different styles, add a home organization center with a dry erase board and a big calendar, or hang candles on the wall.  Bold colored blankets on the couch that contrast with different patterns and colors of throw pillows can really bring a plain living area to life.

Apartments generally have plain rug floors, so find a great area rug to really jazz up your space.  A modern area rug such as this Grey Black circles area rug can be stunning in a room with cream/black and white.  Area rugs are a must have in apartments, as they will make your floor feel cleaner if your rug is worn and add color if your walls are bland.

Be sure to add curtains to your windows.  Apartments use blinds for the most part, and curtains will give your space a very cozy feel. Don't be too matchy with curtains and accessories, as it will give the room a uniform feel when you want something modern or contemporary.

What wall color would go best with brass furniture in a contemporary living room?

Contemporary living rooms are fresh and soothing all at once.  Coupled with brass fittings, a contemporary room can feel almost nautical.

When choosing paint colors, stick to neutrals.  A general taupe/cream on the walls will be outstanding when paired with a feature wall in deep blue.  Blue is a great color to enhance large windows and a dark wood floor.  If your couches and chairs are white, deep blue will be a startling and beautiful contrast.

As you've mentioned that your floors are dark wood, try adding an Allure Blue area rug at the base of your couch.  This beautiful and quirky rug will really try your eye to the feature wall as well as to the floor. With just the right amount of pizazz, a contemporary area rug really makes a style statement.

Avoid over-adorning your feature wall.  Let the color speak for itself by adding a few simple framed photos of the ocean or the beach.

Your curtains should be thin and gauzy white, and accessories for your couch could include blue accented throw pillows and a warm blue cashmere throw.

Imagine sitting in this beautiful room while the breezes blow through the windows. Enjoy!

Decorating my bedroom!! I need help?  I really like the idea of having perhaps like cream walls with a kind of countryside, rural, boho sort of feel.

rho-pg-53.jpg
Rural rooms are great, and even better is when you can mix styles and come up with a clean, country feel.

Cream on your walls would be a great change from pink.  You might want to stick to mocha cream colors, as anything with a yellow undertone casts an unbecoming glow to the room.

When you think of country, you think of reds, blues, deep greens.  I'd choose a completely neutral bed set, such as pure white or deep cream, then accent the bed with country colors.  Find a red checkered throw or a multicolor quilt and spread it across the end of the bed.  Add throw pillows in check or plaids.  Find curtains in the same material, then add colorful accent pull backs.  Get some bigger throw pillows for the floor if you have space.

On your floor, add a country style area rug.  Braided area rugs are very popular in country style rooms.  A rug such as this braided area rug beside your bed would really enhance the whole theme.  It's autumn colors really give it a country feel  If you like blues, a colorful blue area rug would also work with creams and whites.

I'm not sure what type of doors/door knobs you currently have, but older farm houses all had crystal/glass door knobs.  You can find replicas at home stores, and they really add a beautiful touch to a room.

A country room is an inexpensive way to spice up your bedroom.  Have fun!

What colour room to go with a light brown king sized bed?

dyn-tira-1201_300.jpg
It is the plight of every owner of king sized beds that they will have no bedroom space.  Unless your room is extra large, you will suffer for the luxury of your large bed.  In some rooms, you can practically hit the walls with your hand when getting up in the morning.  In such a case, you must create the illusion of space without actually having the space.

Your paint colors must be light and neutral.  Any dark, bold colors on the walls will just add to amplify the tight space in the room.  If your paint is light, you are free to go bold with color when choosing accessories.

If your accessory color of choice is red, add it to areas that will generate the most impact.  Your bedding should remain neutral, but could have red accents.  A throw blanket over the end of the bed as well as some comfy pillows are just enough on the bed to brighten the room.  Add a picture frame in red to your nightstand, or a pretty lampshade with red highlights.

Don't forget about your floor when adding color.  There is nothing more eye-catching than a beautiful area rug.  A red rug that will add a luxurious feel to your room is a red Tiranga.  It has no pattern, but the color is enough to really warm up the room.

Creating a room that will work around your king sized bed is key to really enjoying both your bed and your space.

Covering up retro carpet

I have a dark teal rug.  What color should i paint my room?

Many decorating dilemmas are caused by horribly colored carpet.  Retro colors such as pink, teal, green, blue, or orange were prominent in the 70's and 80's.  If you see them in homes now, they look like a nightmare come to life!

The only solution to having some sort of order to a room with dark teal carpet is to cover as much as you can.  A luxurious shag area rug such as the Chocolate Flokati would cover up a dark teal rug well, and provide you with a soft spot to put to place your feet every morning.

When accessorizing with your new colors, avoid anything that would bring your focus to the dark teal rug.  Choose warm brown candles, lighter toned bedding (blues, greens, white), and throw pillows in a mix of the two.  Buying any teal accessories will only draw your eye to the carpet, and you are doing your best to pretend it's not even there.

How can I make my home look completely different besides using paint?

dyn-ecl-68146_3030.jpg
Painting is definitely the one way to completely alter a room. There are so many different colors to choose from that it would be impossible not to alter the look and feel of your space with paint.  If you can't paint, then you need to get more creative with your accessories.

Imagine blank white walls and a plain beige rug.  How do you alter the look of that room without painting? Accessories, plain and simple.

Add a huge, colorful, vibrant area rug to your living room.  Choose colors that you want to work with, and go as bold as you can for an immediate different look. Circles and Stripes is an area rug that is colorful red/orange.  This rug would look great in a room with a dark, brown couch.  It evokes feelings of fall and the changing leaves.

Avoid accessories that you are used to seeing every day.  Toss out your old throw pillows and add new ones.  Buy a few expensive picture frames and get rid of the bargain store frames.  Splurge on a few luxurious throw blankets to keep you cozy by the fire.  Change up your curtains to something funky and fabulous.

Furniture placement is also something that can change a room. Move your furniture around to different spots.  If possible, add one new piece to the room, whether it is a desk or a new lamp.

Painting is not always neccesary; you too can change your room without a paint brush and a little imagination.

What are some good decoration ideas for a beach room?

rmk-kid-12-253.jpg
Ahhh, the tropics.  We spend our time dreaming of going there, and miss it dearly when we have to leave.  Recreating the tropics at home can, at the very least, make us feel a bit better about coming home from vacation.

Start with your walls.  Paint them a deep, ocean blue.  If you want a two toned room, paint two walls palm tree green and two walls ocean blue.  Mix it up a little, because a beach room is all about bold colors.

Your floor is one of the places that you can really go wild.  Try out an area rug or three in a tropical theme.  The Zuma Beach area rug, Aloha Shirts, or Aloha area rugs would all work great in a beach room.  If you like surfboards, jazz up the floor with a giant surf board that will have you feeling as though you are riding the waves every day.

Hawaiian lamps can be created by using lamp wiring and a tiki torch.  Simply string the wiring through the torch and add a large yellow lightbulb.

Accessories are where you really bring in the feel of the tropics. Add some patio lanterns along your wall or on top of your curtains.  Frame some large photos of Hawaiian flowers and place them on one wall.  If you have one, hang a surf board along another wall.

Creating a beach room is a fun way to bring the tropics home with you.

How much would it cost to redo a teenage bedroom?

dyn-nolita-det-1310-090.jpg
During the time that your child lives in your home, you may change their bedroom 4 or 5 times.  Some teenage girls change theirs every single year, depending on their new favorites and new styles.  Changing your child's room should cost under $500, barring any large furniture costs.

Paint is the less expensive part of changing your room.  For darker colors, you'll need more than one coat of paint.

Rooms that focus on animal prints, such as zebra, are easy to pull together.  Although Zebra print bedding isn't that simple to find, you can add a great area rug such as a Zebra animal print rug.  Having a large area rug on your floor can add a strong style statement.  Accessorize your bed with zebra print pillows, and add some zebra print candles or picture frames.  You'll have an animal print room that isn't over the top.
