Flokati Area Rugs – Wool Flokati Area Rugs
Greek tradition brings us many fine things but nothing greater than the Flokati Rug.
Flokati rugs can be traced back to 5th century Greece, where they were made by the women for warmth during the long, cold winters.
They became popular in the United States during the 1960's but then faded out of style. Thankfully they are back in vogue and now a real statement of style. Traditionally they are creamy white and not dyed but today modern flokati rugs come in a rainbow of colors.
Real flokati area rugs are made from wool and are graded according to the weight of the wool pile. They are measured in grams of wool per square meter. The heavier the grade; the thicker and plusher the rug. So our 4,000g/m2 rugs are thicker and plusher than out 1,200g/m2 rugs – this is why prices vary.
Be watchful of "fake" flokati rugs which are made of synthetic fibers like polypropylene – know that at House Of Area Rugs you are buying real wool flokati rugs.
The making of a traditional flokati rug is a spectacle to behold. They are hand woven and sewn with pure wool. The rugs are then put into baths of running water for an amazing 40 hours. The friction of the water running over the rugs causes the pile to untangle and fluff up. The rug is then hung in the sun to dry. It is amazing to thick that such an unceremonious treatment can produce such a luxurious rug.
If you want a treat, buy a flokati rug for your bedroom; the sensation of your feet hitting this voluptuous, cozy rug has to be experienced to be appreciated.
