Unlike timber that can take many, many years to grow to a maturity, bamboo grows 8-12 feet annually. So carefully monitored harvesting of sustainable bamboo forests is much more ecologically sound than clear-felling of hardwood forests.

Most bamboo grows in tropical climates but the Anji Mountains are different. They experience a 2 month freeze every year. It is this extended cold temperature that stops the sap flow in the bamboo which causes it to grow slower. This slow growth in turn causes the bamboo plant to become denser and harder; resulting in a more hard-wearing bamboo well suited for rug making.
